Primary School Curriculum Developer

About the Role

GoCongo Foundation requires curriculum experts to create a curriculum of Direct Instruction, for all main Primary subjects, in conformance with the national curriculum stipulations of the DRC. While the curriculum would ultimately have to be in the French language, those elements which do not rely on phonics can be written in English, and later translated.

Eighteen community schools in very remote locations in the DRC, which have recently come under the care of GoCongo Foundation, require a curriculum of Direct Instruction, so that the quality of lesson delivery can improve through the use of ‘scripted’ lessons. The ultimate goal is to improve learning outcomes in a context where teachers have very low skills and logistical challenges mean that extensive teacher training is not a realistic path to improvement.

Job Description

The curriculum experts would:

  • Develop a curriculum framework for primary subjects, in accordance with the national curriculum stipulations of the DRC, but with content and examples contextualised for rural communities where possible, and in accordance with GoCongo’s Values Framework (see the GoCongo Foundation’s Approach to Community Schools’ publication under the ‘Our Impact’ page of our website).
  • Granularise the curriculum framework into schemes of work and lesson plans
  • Write scripts for each lesson, optimised for teachers with weak language skills and poor subject-matter knowledge
  • Write accompanying curriculum materials, such as homework plans, project plans, and formative and summative assessments
  • Write a plan for limited training to enable teachers to use the materials

Requirements

The selected candidate will have at least three years of experience in primary teaching, including experience of curriculum-related planning such as making schemes of work and lesson plans.

Candidates should have an interest in education for development in rural areas of economically weaker countries, and some knowledge of the ‘Direct Instruction’ methodology (also known as ‘scripted lessons’).

Fluency in written French is desirable, but not essential.
